2012 MARYLAND SENIOR POET LAUREATE DIES AT 64

Jane Huey Gallagher, 64, of Glen Burnie, Maryland, died March 25. Her obituary said, “Her gallant, loving heart failed her.” Jane worked in retail management for several years.

While Jane attended Glen Burnie High School, from which she graduated in 1966, she was a flutist with the marching and concert bands. She volunteered with the Welcome Home Maryland program for returning troops. Survivors include her husband Terence; mother Irma; sisters Marcy, Gloria and Jerrilyn; several nieces and nephews, and her cat Fitty.

According to Jane’s loving husband of thirty years, Terry, “Jane once said ‘Butterflies are angels around us.’” In his tribute of September 6, 2013, signed “Jane Gallagher’s broken little boy,” Terry wrote: God bless you, Purple Lady. Thank you for giving so much. The complete text of his tribute is in GOLDEN WORDS with Jane’s “In Memoriam” Golden Pen Award.

We reprint the poem which won the 2012 Maryland Senior Poet Laureate Award in Jane’s first and only contest. She frequently prepared poems on the computer for her dear friend, Verna Puntigan, SPL of South Carolina, who suggested Jane enter. Jane had no children.

TO MY KIDS

Make your bed; put your clothes away;

Otherwise, you’ll be punished today.

Take out the trash, stop acting the fool;

Hurry up, or you’ll be late for school.

Eat your breakfast; stop picking on your brother.

Remember: I make the rules, I’m the mother.
