OUR SIXTIETH ANNIVERSARY
(Poem to wife Mary on renewal of marriage vows at Our Lady of the Cove Church, Kimberling City, Missouri, December 26, 2004)
It seems like only yesterday,
When you became my bride.
An angel dressed in tones of gray,
And standing at my side
While, watching over both of us,
Was God's own loving Son.
When our candles came together,
Our hearts became as one.
Though that flame at times would sputter,
There never was a doubt,
No earthly powers in this world
Could snuff that candle out,
For your life has been my sunshine.
You've brightened all my days,
And I have loved you forever
In countless joyful ways.
And though I shared my love for you,
With each child that you bore,
My love for you grew greater still,
And stronger than before.
Yet sadness came into our life,
And seeds of sorrow sown,
When God took Mark's and Suzie's hands
And claimed them for his own.
Yet your faith has been my comfort,
Your courage my delight.
Your giving of yourself to all,
A beacon of God's light.
And, yes, I shall love you always,
To that glorious time,
When God in all his majesty
Will take your hand from mine.
Then you will live eternally
In everlasting peace
And also be within my heart.
My love will never cease.
But now upon this festive day,
I give this simple toast:
You're the greatest wife I've ever had,
And I still love you most.
