HECTOR

When Hector found the beat-up hooker in an alley, he carried her to his room. "I fix," he murmured. He sang love songs and soon the whore woke up.
Angelita stared at Hector's blind cat. "It's got two glass eyes!"
       "I fix."
       "Por Dios! I'm leaving."
       Hector's dog snarled.
"He's got no hind legs. Porque?"
The punchdrunk pugilist's battered face beamed. "Your arm's cut. I fix."
Hector's tortilla soup calmed Angelita. She stayed. She healed. When she started to leave, Hector smashed Angelita's arm.
       "Bastardo! You broke it. Porque?"
Hector smiled. "I cannot fix it if it ain't broke."
