MESQUITE

Mesquite
beans follow
Deep Creek upstream
and North when the
lay of land sharply snub-noses
a bridge, enslaves hulls on
sharp barbs along the fence to hang,
dehydrate and drop rotted mulch. "Look, Jason Boy!
The pods are changing to little seed boats."
Jason Boy and Patti Sue follow the water on stick-horses
and watch the seeds scatter in the Autumn wind.
New life explodes, expels a future tree, and sinks.;
"Where did it go?" Jason Boy asks.
"It sunk. There goes another two dollars."
"Pa's gonna shake his head
and look for straight
Mesquite trunks to
make future
fencepost."
