Katherine Sherin-Zauner, 81, of Venice, is a returning SPL winner. In 2007 and 2010 she was Florida Senior Poet Laureate. She is a retired teacher with five children, fifteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She has published four poetry chapbooks. Other interests are reading and cultivating African violets and orchids. She received the Golden Pen Award for Living Poet in 2009. Her sun sign is Virgo

Where have all the children gone?
They are all grown-up and moved away.
Some neighbors now enjoy
a piece of peace
while others miss
staccato shouts
the whir of bikes
and crack of bats;
mourning the loss
of childhood joy;
missing the sounds
of their own youth.
