NEW YORK SENIOR POET LAUREATE
Vincent J. Tomeo

POETRY READING III

I waited for the cymbals to crash
The audience to applaud
The curtains to open

Only three people showed up
Two old ladies who couldn’t hear well
One janitor who sat with mop and pail

I listened I read I wondered
Where is the massive audience
To hear what a poet has to say

I read to my audience
As if there were a thousand people present
