Golden Pen Award
DEWELL H. BYRD

BEFORE I TELL YOU

that I love you
sing our secret song
ask for your heart

I should tell you

birds pass and leaves fall
promises fade in winter
truth happens all night

and the me I want to be
gets all mixed up
with what others see.
