BEFORE I TELL YOU
that I love you
sing our secret song
ask for your heart
I should tell you
birds pass and leaves fall
promises fade in winter
truth happens all night
and the me I want to be
gets all mixed up
with what others see.
Dewell H. Byrd, 79, of Central Point, Oregon, recently moved from Eureka, California. A retired public school administrator, he started writing poetry at age 72 and rapidly attained the title of published poet/competition winner. He is past-California Senior Poet Laureate and 2007 winner of the National Senior Poet Laureate Runner Up Award. His poem is one of three special love poems by living poets selected to receive the 2010 Golden Pen Award. His sign is Capricorn.
